So many people start the year by saying that they want to run a marathon or drop 25lbs by the end of the year. Healthy new year's resolutions like these are a positive step in the right direction. And yet, some of us keep making the same resolutions year after year without ever achieving them. Here are 5 tips to help you set fitness goals you'll actually stick to.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when setting fitness goals is trying to do too much too soon. Instead of overhauling your entire lifestyle overnight, start with small, manageable changes. If you haven't been exercising at all, start with 15–20 minutes of movement three times a week. As that becomes a habit, gradually increase the duration and frequency.
Vague goals like "get fit" or "eat healthier" are hard to measure and easy to abandon. Instead, get specific: "I will walk 30 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday" or "I will add one serving of vegetables to my lunch every day." Specific goals give you a clear target to aim for and make it easier to track your progress.
Research consistently shows that people who write down their goals are significantly more likely to achieve them. Keep a fitness journal, use an app, or simply post your goals somewhere visible. The act of writing reinforces your commitment and keeps your goals top of mind.
Whether it's a friend, a family member, or a professional coach, having someone to check in with dramatically increases your chances of success. Share your goals with someone who will encourage you, celebrate your wins, and gently nudge you back on track when life gets in the way.
Appearance-based goals can be motivating, but they can also be discouraging when progress is slow or invisible. Shift your focus to how exercise makes you feel — more energetic, less stressed, better sleep, improved mood. When you connect your fitness routine to how good it makes you feel, you're much more likely to stick with it long-term.
At Iron Belle Fitness, we're here to help you make this your best year yet. Whether you need a personal trainer, a health coach, or a yoga class to get you started, we've got you covered.
